Retail to Head Office Pathways

The move from Retail to our Head Office or Field team is a common occurrence and we have many examples of employees who in the past and present have been groomed for that next level of Management.

Follow the steps below to see how a Career in Retail can take you right through from retail and customer service to a fabulous role in our Head Office team.

"I started my career with Clinique in a very tiny country town in Victoria, slowly working my way up to the big beast that is MYER Melbourne and now State Education Manager! I have worked across all different channels including Pharmacy, David Jones and Myer spending the majority of my time at Myer Melbourne. Through the past 12 years I have been given so many opportunities to grow my skills and expertise, with that my love grew for not only the brand but for the company. Some career highlights have been winning Stars to New York, Clinique Counter Manager of the Year, Clinique Consultant of the Year – twice and Team of the Year – twice. I have been given support and guidance from every person I have encountered at Estee Lauder Companies from international visitors to payroll to our brand managers!”

If you’re thinking about applying for a role in one of our many brands we prefer you to have the following credentials:

  • Previous Retail Experience
  • Previous Beauty Experience
  • Passion for Customer Service and Sales

You can expect that your days on counter will be fast paced and energetic. There is always something to keep you busy, whether it is serving customers utilising our High Touch philosophy, educating customers on products, techniques and skin care regimes, merchandising products, on counter coaching/mentoring and or administration activities.

At The Estée Lauder Companies our Retail employees are the face of our brands. Each Retail employee is a beauty, trend and style authority. This means looking the part. Customers are attracted to our counters as they know they can expect to be served by Retail employees who will be wearing the latest trends or classic makeup – they want to be able to replicate that look. Excellent grooming is an important component of who we are.

Working in one of our brands signifies team work. On counter our Retail employees work in teams and as such need to build collaborative relationships built on trust and respect. This environment creates an ambiance where information, ideas and knowledge are shared with ease.

If you have an interest in working in Management or in Head Office it is important to be vocal and speak to your Manager. We don’t know you’re interested unless you tell us! The path to a role in Head Office doesn’t necessarily mean an employee has to gain a Retail Management role to progress their career. However, in most cases it does help your long term career path to have management experience.

Move Up - Manage A Counter & Lead Your Team Image

Move Up - Manage A Counter & Lead Your Team

We are a Company that heavily invests in succession planning. The best way to become an Assistant Retail Manager or Retail (Counter) Manager is to start out as a Retail Employee. Starting your career in a retail customer service role means that you intuitively understand the culture of the brand and recognise the importance of providing the team with a clear framework of strategic priorities to achieve counter goals.

However, from time to time we do need to look outside of our business to engage new talent. We prefer our Retail (Counter) Managers to have the following qualifications:

  • 3 - 5 years of Retail Experience
  • 2 years of previous Management experience
  • Exceptional Communication skills
  • Previous experience Coaching and Developing team members

At The Estée Lauder Companies, we consider our managers to be ‘Leaders’ in every sense of the word. Our Retail Leaders are responsible for the total operation of their assigned store or counter and leads their team in customer service, sales achievement and successes. The Retail Leader is also accountable for the development and progression of their team, including the Assistant Retail Manager. It essential to the success of this role, that the Leader be capable of developing strong working relationships with those around them and with their team in Head Office.

If you have an interest in working in Management or in Head Office it is important to be vocal and speak to your Manager. We don’t know you’re interested unless you tell us! We can help you achieve your goals by providing experience in the field your interested in whilst in the retail environment.

Take It To The Next Level - Working At Our Head Office

There are a number of different business functions in Head Office a Retail employee can develop into:

  • Sales
  • Education
  • Visual Merchandising
  • Travel Retail

Retail employees can gain experience whilst working on the retail floor in the above Head Office functions. In the past we have given retail employees opportunities to take on extra responsibilities when their direct reports have gone on holidays or helped with a project or event.

However it is also possible to combine your University Degree or TAFE Diploma with retail experience and apply for a Head Office role in Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Online, Creative Services, Communications, Store Design and Supply Chain, Procurement and Inventory Management. The Human Resources team look favourably upon those who have previously worked within the Estée Lauder Companies family of brands or have experience working for Cosmetics / Retail or FMCG Companies.
